Leigh Fisher – Executive

Leigh Fisher is in his third year as an executive member of the AFLUA. He is the representative for the field umpires and hopes his experience from being involved in the game at the top level for 13 years, as both a player and now umpire, will be an asset to the association. When not umpiring, Leigh is a secondary school teacher and runs a small fitness training group in Melbourne.

Drew Kowalski – Executive

Drew Kowalski is in his second year as an executive member of the AFLUA representing for the boundary umpires. Drew began his AFL umpiring career in 2011, after running in the VFL from 2004. Drew brings a national focus to his role with the association. When not umpiring, Drew works as an Electrical Engineer for an international based engineering company.

Adam Wojcik – Executive

Adam Wojcik has commenced his second year on the AFLUA Executive. He believed that the time was right to step up into a more formal leadership role and being the Exec representative for the Goal Umpires was a fantastic way to do just that. He believes he will be able to build on the success of the previous executive and looks forward to being the voice of the Goal Umpires Nationally. He believes that Goal Umpiring is currently in a strong place at the moment with the task ahead to keep it there.


Peter Howe – CEO

Peter Howe has been CEO since November 2011. Peter comes to the organisation with a strong history in umpiring and umpire coaching in both the VFL and AFL that commenced in 1975. He is looking to develop and provide a relevant range of programs to support all members across Australia in becoming well rounded people who enjoy umpiring at the elite level and are rewarded for their efforts. Peter worked in education for 22 years. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Graduate Diplomas in Secondary Teaching and Careers Counselling.

Julia Gauci – Administrative Assistant

Julia Gauci is in her seventh year as the Administration Assistant at the AFLUA. Her role covers general administration, marketing and communications, events and the member benefits program. Julia commenced employment at the AFLUA in 2011 as an AFL SportsReady trainee. She has completed Certificate 3 and 4 in Business Administration, and is currently completing a Bachelor in Business – Sports Management.

Peter Kelly – Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Peter joined the AFLUA office in 2016 in a newly created position of Marketing and Communications Coordinator. A former AFL goal umpire, Peter has an extensive understanding of umpiring and football issues. He has held the position of Executive Officer with the Victorian Football Umpires’ Association (VFUA) since 1993 and has worked in various local leagues in Melbourne.  Peter has also served on the AFLUA executive committee as Social Secretary and was part of a committee which organized the AFLUA Centenary Birthday Celebration Ball in 2009. Peter is an Honorary Life Member of both the AFLUA and VFUA and has also been awarded a Special Award by the VFUA for his contribution to umpiring.  Peter previously held a number of senior human resources roles with the Victorian State Government in a career spanning 31 years. He has a Bachelor of Arts (Human Resources) from the University of Iowa (USA) and a Cert IV in Personal Training.

Chris Gordon – Marketing and Communications Intern

Chris joined the AFLUA team in 2017 as part of an internship program. He is currently undergoing a Business & Marketing degree as well as taking his place on the AFL boundary umpires panel. Chris has been a running member of the AFLUA since his AFL career commenced in 2009. Chris’s role involves working closely with Julia and Peter to enhance social media platforms, assist in partnerships, and create the best possible value to its members. This will greatly assist Chris in his professional career.
